Intermittent fasting can be a useful weight loss tool for some individuals, but its safety and effectiveness in conjunction with GLP-1s have not been specifically studied.
Our clinical team generally does not recommend intermittent fasting while on GLP-1s.
This is because fasting can increase the risk of:
-
Dehydration
-
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)
-
Side effects such as nausea, dizziness, or faintness
GLP-1s already slow digestion and reduce appetite, so missing meals can exacerbate side effects and leave you feeling unwell.
That said, we recognise that everyone is different. If you are already well-established on a GLP-1, have minimal side effects, and have experience with fasting, it may be possible to do so safely with support.
Please submit a request to discuss your options with a prescriber before starting any fasting approach.
