Some foods naturally contain sulphur, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, whole grains, and dairy products. When combined with slower digestion caused by medications like semaglutide (Wegovy) or tirzepatide (Mounjaro), this can sometimes lead to an increase in burping or flatulence with a sulphur (rotten egg) smell.
Additionally, acid reflux triggered by the medication may allow unpleasant-smelling gases to rise from the stomach into the mouth.
The good news is that these symptoms usually improve over time as your body adjusts to the treatment and the acid reflux symptoms subside.
Tips to help manage bloating and burping
-
Eat when you are hungry
Only eat until you feel comfortably full. (It’s fine if you don’t finish everything on your plate.) -
Choose smaller, more frequent meals
Focus on bland, low-fat options. -
Avoid foods and smells that trigger symptoms
Everyone is different — notice which foods worsen bloating or discomfort for you. -
Stay upright after eating
Remain seated or standing for at least 30–60 minutes after meals. -
Stay hydrated, but pace your intake
Aim for no more than one glass of water per hour to avoid adding extra pressure to your stomach.
