A mild increase in resting heart rate can occur when starting GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy (semaglutide) or Mounjaro (tirzepatide). This typically happens as your body adjusts to the medication.
Clinical studies show that patients using semaglutide may experience an average increase of around 10 beats per minute. This is generally not a cause for concern if no other symptoms are present.
For reference, a normal adult resting heart rate is typically between 60 and 100 beats per minute.
What to do if you notice an increased heart rate
- Sit down and relax in a quiet place.
- Stay calm and avoid panicking, which can make symptoms worse.
- Loosen any tight or restrictive clothing to help with breathing.
- Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, energy drinks, nicotine, alcohol, and recreational drugs.
We recommend checking your resting heart rate regularly, particularly at rest, after taking your medication, and whenever you feel an unusually fast heartbeat
Keeping a record can help during your review consultations with your Prescriber.
When to seek urgent medical help
Stop taking your medication and seek immediate medical attention (call 999 or visit A&E) if you experience:
- Heart palpitations
- Resting heart rate exceeding 150 beats per minute for more than 30 minutes
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or feeling faint
- Chest discomfort or pain
- Cool, moist skin
- Unsteadiness
- Bluish, greyish, or very pale skin or lips
- History of thyroid disease or heart disease combined with any of the above symptoms
