How to manage heartburn/acid reflux?

Acid reflux or heartburn can occur when your medication slows the emptying of your stomach. This can allow food and acid to stay in the stomach longer, leading to discomfort.

You may notice:

  • A feeling of fullness after small meals
  • An overly full sensation after regular meals
  • Occasional reflux, even when not eating

Tips to help relieve reflux and indigestion

Maintain a regular eating pattern

  • Aim for three balanced meals and one to two small snacks per day.

Eat mindfully

  • Slow down during meals.
  • Pause between bites to allow digestion.

Manage fluid intake

  • Avoid drinking large amounts of fluids around meal times, immediately before exercise, and right before bed

Choose reflux-friendly foods

  • Limit foods that can trigger symptoms, such as fatty or fried foods, spicy dishes, tomatoes, onions, garlic, coffee, tea, and chocolate, fizzy drinks and alcohol

Stay upright after eating

  • Remain seated or standing for at least 30–60 minutes after meals.
  • When lying down, sleep with your head elevated or on your left side to ease digestion.

Adjust sleeping position if needed

  • If symptoms worsen at night, use an extra pillow to elevate your head and upper body.
