Can I drink alcohol while taking GLP-1s?

It’s best to limit your alcohol intake once you start treatment, at least until you understand how the medication affects you.

There are a few reasons for this:

  • Alcohol is high in calories, which can slow weight loss progress.
  • Alcohol increases the risk of nausea, vomiting, and dehydration, common side effects of semaglutide and tirzepatide.
  • GLP-1s delay gastric emptying, which can change how alcohol is absorbed and tolerated.
  • High alcohol intake can further slow your stomach’s movements, raising the risk of gastrointestinal issues.

We recommend following the UK national alcohol guidelines:

  • No more than 14 units of alcohol per week, spread over at least 3 days.
  • Include a few alcohol-free days each week.

As a guide:

  • 1 unit = 100 ml wine, 285 ml regular beer, 30 ml spirits, 60 ml fortified wine, or 375 ml low-alcohol beer (under 3% ABV).
  • You can use a unit calculator to track your intake if needed.

Tips for mindful alcohol consumption:

  • Drink water to quench thirst, not alcohol.
  • Choose low-alcohol or "lite" beers whenever possible.
  • Use low-calorie mixers, such as diet tonic or soda water.
  • Eat a meal or snack containing carbohydrates before drinking.
  • Drink slowly and set a limit for yourself.

Important:
Alcohol is not recommended for people with diabetes, as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar levels.
