How to manage bruising after injecting?

Mild bruising after injecting your medication is common. It typically occurs when the needle punctures a small blood vessel under the skin.

Here are some tips to minimise bruising and make injections smoother:

Tips for smoother injections

  • Change your injection site each time
Rotate between different areas of your abdomen, thighs, or upper arms.
  • Inject slightly away from the belly button
Some people bruise more easily near the centre of the abdomen. Try injecting further out.
  • Flatten, don’t pinch, your skin.
Make the skin flat at the injection site. Avoid pinching unless specifically advised.
  • Inject at a 90° angle
Insert the needle straight in to reduce tissue trauma and discomfort.
  • Use an ice pack
Apply ice to the injection site for 30 seconds before injecting. This can numb the skin, reduce pain, and lower the risk of bruising.
