NHS availability
Wegovy (semaglutide):
- Available on the NHS for weight management with specific eligibility criteria
- Typically requires a BMI of 35+ (or 30+ with weight-related conditions)
- Must be prescribed by specialist weight management services
- Often has long waiting lists due to high demand
Mounjaro (tirzepatide):
- Currently approved on the NHS only for Type 2 diabetes
- Not yet widely available on the NHS for weight management
- NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) is reviewing its use for obesity
Private Prescriptions (via Compound)
Both Wegovy and Mounjaro are available through Compound with broader eligibility criteria than the NHS:
- Available to patients with a BMI of 27+ (with weight-related conditions) or 30+ without conditions
- No waiting lists - treatment can begin shortly after consultation
- Ongoing support and monitoring are included in the programme
- More flexibility in dosing and titration schedules
