GLP-1 medications can interact with other medicines primarily through their effect on slowing gastric emptying. Here are important interactions to be aware of:
Oral medications requiring specific blood levels
- Oral contraceptives: May have reduced effectiveness, particularly during Mounjaro dose increases
- Warfarin and other anticoagulants: May require more frequent INR monitoring
- Levothyroxine: Take at least four hours apart from GLP-1 medication
Diabetes medications
- Insulin: Increased risk of hypoglycaemia; dose may need reduction
- Sulphonylureas (e.g., gliclazide): Increased risk of hypoglycaemia; dose may need reduction
- Metformin: Generally safe, but monitor for gastrointestinal side effects
Other common medications
- NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen): May increase the risk of gastrointestinal side effects
- Opioid pain medications: May have amplified effects due to slowed gastric emptying
- Antibiotics: Some may have altered absorption; take at least 2 hours apart
Supplements and over-the-counter medications
- Iron supplements: May have reduced absorption; take at least 4 hours apart
- Antacids: Take at least two hours apart from GLP-1 medication
- Laxatives: May increase gastrointestinal side effects
Alcohol
- Can increase the risk of low blood sugar
- May worsen gastrointestinal side effects
- Reduced tolerance is commonly reported
Always inform your Compound prescriber about all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter products you use. If you start any new medication while on treatment, please submit a request to check for potential interactions.
